Wastewater Field Technician – Southeast Houston

Openwork is partnering with Harris County to hire a Wastewater Field Technician—a critical role at the intersection of public health and environmental protection. This isn’t just a job—it’s an opportunity to be on the front lines of protecting clean water systems and ensuring the well-being of Houston’s communities.

If you enjoy working outdoors, value precision, and want a career where your efforts directly improve public health, this opportunity was built for you.

What You’ll Do

As a Wastewater Field Technician, you’ll work at the heart of Houston’s wastewater surveillance and treatment systems. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Coordinating daily routes to ensure sample pick-ups are scheduled and completed on time.

  • Collecting wastewater samples from treatment plants and municipal sites, following established public health and environmental safety protocols.

  • Maintaining precise documentation by accurately labeling all sample bottles with collection details (date, time, initials) and recording the information in logs.

  • Transporting and delivering samples to designated laboratories while safeguarding the integrity of each sample.

  • Completing chain-of-custody paperwork and securing required signatures to ensure compliance and accountability.

  • Supporting treatment facility operations with accurate reporting, strong communication, and a commitment to safety.

What We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate is someone who thrives in the field, is committed to accuracy, and understands the importance of environmental stewardship.

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Environmental Public Health, Environmental Science, Microbiology, Engineering, or a related field is preferred, but not required.

  • Licensing: A valid driver’s license is required.

  • Experience: Prior experience with wastewater treatment facilities, municipal utility districts, or environmental sample collection is a plus. Familiarity with GIS mapping tools (ArcGIS/QGIS) is preferred.

  • Attributes: Highly dependable with strong attendance and punctuality, detail-oriented in documentation, and comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.

Physical & Environmental Demands

This is an active, outdoor role. Candidates should be prepared for:

  • Lifting and carrying up to 150 lbs with a partner.

  • Extended periods of driving between sites, as well as walking, bending, and standing.

  • Working in all weather conditions—including heat, cold, and rain.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Pay: $26.00/hour

  • Schedule: Full-time

  • Benefits: Health, dental, and vision coverage

Why This Role Matters

Every sample you collect helps track and protect the health of thousands of residents. You’ll gain valuable field experience, contribute to environmental sustainability, and support systems that make Houston a safer, healthier place to live.
