Veterinary Assistant

Location: Harris County | Northside Houston

The Impact You’ll Make

As a Veterinary Assistant, you’ll support veterinarians and clinical staff in delivering quality medical care to shelter animals. Your work will help ensure efficient operations, safe treatment environments, and positive experiences for both animals and the public. You’ll also play a role in educating pet owners and supporting responsible pet care practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide daily animal husbandry and compassionate care under veterinary supervision

  • Maintain clean, organized, and fully stocked clinical and treatment areas

  • Sterilize surgical instruments and medical equipment

  • Accurately document treatments, diagnoses, and procedures using medical software

  • Administer medications and assist with diagnostic testing as directed

  • Support animal restraint, radiography, and preventive care procedures

  • Educate pet owners on post-treatment care and responsible pet ownership

  • Uphold health, safety, and sanitation standards in a fast-paced shelter environment

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required

  • At least one year of experience in animal care, veterinary, or shelter environments

  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office with strong data entry accuracy

  • Clear verbal and written communication skills

  • Team-oriented, adaptable, and comfortable in a fast-paced setting

  • Compassionate, reliable, and committed to animal welfare

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This is a hands-on role in an active shelter setting with exposure to animals, allergens, odors, noise, and changing temperatures. The position requires frequent standing, bending, lifting, and stooping, safe animal restraint, and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Schedule & Pay

  • Pay: $16.50 per hour (weekly pay)

  • Schedule: 40 hours per week with rotating weekend shifts

  • Flexibility: Availability required to meet shelter and clinic needs
