Openwork is proud to partner with Harris County to hire a dedicated Veterinary Assistant for a high-volume shelter and clinic. This is an opportunity to put your skills and compassion to work in a mission-driven environment where every day truly makes a difference.
As a Veterinary Assistant, you’ll play a vital role on the front lines of shelter medicine. You’ll support exams, treatments, and procedures that directly improve animal health and wellbeing—all while ensuring a safe, efficient, and organized clinical environment. You’ll also help educate pet owners and collaborate closely with veterinarians and fellow team members to deliver exceptional care.
Provide daily animal husbandry and compassionate care under medical supervision, following all safety protocols.
Maintain clean, organized, and fully stocked workspaces; sterilize surgical instruments.
Accurately document treatments, diagnoses, and procedures in the shelter’s software system.
Administer medications and perform diagnostic tests as directed by veterinary staff.
Assist with safe restraint, radiography, and preventive care procedures.
Educate pet owners on responsible ownership and post-treatment care.
Support health and safety standards in a busy, high-volume shelter setting.
High school diploma or GED (required).
At least 6 months of experience in animal care, veterinary, or shelter settings.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and accurate data entry.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Team-oriented, adaptable, and comfortable in a fast-paced environment.
This is a hands-on role in an energetic shelter environment with exposure to allergens, odors, noise, and varying temperatures. The position involves frequent standing, bending, lifting, and stooping, as well as safely restraining animals and handling up to 50 lbs.
Pay: $16.50/hour, paid weekly
Schedule: 40 hours per week with rotating weekend shifts
Flexibility: Required to meet shelter needs
