Structural Welder/Fitter Combo

Pay: $22-$28/hour
Location: Houston, TX 
Job Type: Temp-to-Hire
Schedule: Mon-Fri | 6:00am - 4:30pm (Some Saturdays as needed)

The Houston branch of Openwork has partnered with a local manufacturing company to add a Welder to their growing team. This is a great long-term opportunity for someone with welding experience seeking stability and a long-term career.

What You'll Be Doing: 

• Print Interpretation & Layout: Read, interpret, and cross-reference complex engineering drawings, isometric sketches, cut sheets, and weld symbols to determine sequence of assembly and required tolerances ($\pm$ 1/16").

• Fitting & Assembly: Lay out, align, square, level, and tack weld beams, tubing, channels, angles, and base plates into rigid structural weldments using dogs, wedges, framing squares, jacks, and clamps.

• Thermal Cutting & Joint Prep: Operate oxy-fuel torches, hand plasma cutters, carbon arc gouging rigs, and mag drills to cut, slot, cope, bevel, and prep weld joints according to WPS (Welding Procedure Specifications).

• Welding Operations: Deposit sound structural welds primarily using FCAW (Flux-Cored Arc Welding / Dual Shield, typically .045" or 1/16" wire) and GMAW (MIG), achieving full-penetration or fillet welds with minimal porosity, undercut, or spatter.

• Quality & Dimensional Control: Inspect fit-up gaps, bevel angles, root openings, and overall frame diagonals before final welding; grind, dress, and stamp finished weldments for paint/galvanizing prep.

• Safety & Maintenance: Keep work bays clean, perform daily inspections on welding leads and torch hoses, follow OSHA standards, and observe proper PPE rules (welding hoods, metatarsal/steel-toe boots, ear and eye protection).

What We're Looking For: 

• 3+ years of Welding experience (Mig & Fluxcore)

• 3+ years of fitter experience 

• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs

• Knowledge of shop safety in a manufacturing environment 
• Knowledge of AWS D1 Standards 
• Ability to pass a 3G open root test on 1" plate
