MANUAL MACHINIST
Responsible for machining, repairing, and restoring components used in electric motors, generators, pumps, gearboxes, and other rotating equipment. The machinist operates manual lathes, mills, drill presses, and related equipment to repair shafts, bearing journals, housings, endbells, and other critical components while maintaining precise tolerances and quality standards.
Machining Operations
- Set up and operate manual engine lathes, vertical mills, drill presses, and related machine tools.
- Machine motor shafts, bearing journals, housings, endbells, and coupling fits.
- Perform shaft reclamation and repair operations.
- Manufacture replacement parts from drawings, sketches, or samples.
- Machine keyways, threads, tapers, and precision fits.
- Repair bearing fits and housing bores.
Motor Repair Support
- Inspect motor components for wear and damage.
- Measure and document critical dimensions.
- Assist mechanics with assembly and disassembly of rotating equipment.
- Machine components to meet OEM and repair specifications.
- Verify proper bearing and seal fits.
Precision Measurement
Use precision measuring instruments including:
- Micrometers
- Calipers
- Dial indicators
- Bore gauges
- Telescoping gauges
- Surface plates
- Maintain dimensional tolerances and finish requirements.
Documentation and Quality
- Read and interpret blueprints and repair drawings.
- Complete machining and inspection documentation.
- Verify work meets customer and company quality standards.
- Follow established safety procedures and shop practices.
Qualifications Required
- High school diploma or GED.
- 3+ years of manual machining experience.
- Proficiency operating manual lathes and milling machines.
- Ability to read mechanical drawings and blueprints.
- Experience using precision measuring instruments.
Qualifications Preferred
- Experience in electric motor repair, pump repair, or rotating equipment repair.
- Welding and metal spraying experience.
- Familiarity with shaft restoration techniques.
- Experience with dynamic balancing concepts.
- Forklift and overhead crane experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Precision machining and measurement.
- Bearing fit and tolerance knowledge.
- Shaft repair and restoration techniques.
- Mechanical troubleshooting.
- Blueprint reading.
- Understanding of rotating equipment.
- Strong attention to detail and craftsmanship.
Typical Work Performed
- Repair worn bearing journals.
- Machine replacement motor shafts.
- Restore damaged endbells.
- Machine bearing housings.
- Cut keyways and threads.
- Manufacture obsolete replacement parts.
- Verify shaft runout and concentricity.
- Support emergency customer repairs.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
- Frequent standing and walking.
- Ability to work around industrial equipment.
- Ability to operate overhead lifting devices safely.
Pay Rate: $30-45. DOE
Located in Zip: Houston, TX 77029
Shift: M-F, some Weekends 7-4pm
