Part-Time Academic Coach

Houston & Surrounding Counties
Pay: $25/hour
Schedule: 6–10 hours per week | After 4:00 PM availability (Mon–Thu)

Openwork is partnering with a youth-focused organization to hire Part-Time Academic Coaches to support students in foster care. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about education, mentorship, and helping young people build confidence and academic independence. Program Overview

Academic Coaches work with adolescents and young adults ages 14–25 who are currently in or transitioning out of foster care. Coaches provide academic tutoring, mentorship, and life-skills support while helping students prepare for long-term success, including college and post-secondary pathways.

Sessions may be conducted in person, virtually, or in a hybrid format, depending on student needs. Training is provided prior to placement.

Location & Travel

This role requires travel throughout Houston, Harris County, and surrounding counties. Candidates must be able to travel to the following zip codes as needed:
77053, 77051, 77061, 77088

Reliable transportation is required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one and small-group academic tutoring

  • Support students with homework, assignments, and exam preparation

  • Help students develop effective study habits, organization, and time management skills

  • Guide students through college and post-secondary planning when applicable

  • Build positive, supportive, and professional relationships with students

  • Maintain accurate records of attendance and academic progress

Qualifications

  • Experience working with adolescents and young adults ages 14–25 (required)

  • Background in tutoring, mentoring, coaching, or youth development

  • Strong communication skills, patience, and professionalism

  • Proficiency in academic subjects relevant to tutoring needs

  • Ability to travel within the service area

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; relevant experience considered

  • Availability after 4:00 PM, Monday–Thursday

  • Commitment of 6–10 hours per week

Compensation & Training

  • $25 per hour

  • Paid training provided
