Join Openwork and become a vital part of the Harris County elections process. We’re hiring Temporary Instructors to train and support election workers across the county. This is more than a job — it’s a chance to support democracy from the ground up.
What You’ll Do:
Learn all election-related content outlined in the training manual and curriculum
Deliver engaging, effective training to election workers, both in person and over the phone
Provide excellent customer service and serve as a key support resource during election periods
Travel to various Harris County locations to lead training sessions and offer on-site coaching
Respond to last-minute needs and emergencies during critical voting times
Use printed materials to communicate procedures and policy clearly
Support other election-related departments as needed
What We’re Looking For:
High school diploma or equivalent
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to follow state and county election policies precisely
Physically able to lift up to 40 pounds and stay on your feet for extended periods
Willingness to travel, including night driving and long distances across the county
Comfortable working in high-pressure environments and remaining solution-focused
Preferred Qualifications:
One year of training experience
Prior experience as an election judge, trainer, or in a similar election-related role
Familiarity with vote center procedures, election equipment, and Harris County election systems
Ideal Candidate Will Be:
A confident public speaker and strong communicator
Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision
Tech-savvy and proficient with Microsoft Office and other digital tools
Able to adapt to changing schedules and priorities with ease
Calm under pressure, with excellent leadership and conflict-resolution skills
Schedule and Hours:
Temporary position working 30 to 40 hours per week (overtime possible during elections)
Train-the-trainer periods: August 11 to September 13, 2025, and January 5 to January 16, 2026 (Monday to Friday, hours vary)
Official training period: Must be available to work any day of the week, though you will only work five days per week
Training shifts: 8 to 12 hours
Election shifts: 14 to 20 hours
Holidays off include Thanksgiving week, winter holidays, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and others
Reduced hours and mandatory vacation scheduled between elections
No time off permitted during peak election periods: October 13 to November 11, 2025, and February 9 to March 10, 2026
Physical Demands:
This role requires physical activity including walking, standing, pushing, pulling, and lifting. You must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and remain active throughout long shifts.
