Transportation Dispatcher

Location: Houston, TX 77013
Pay: $24.00 per hour
Project Duration: 12 Weeks

Openwork is seeking an experienced Transportation Dispatcher for a 12-week project with a leading transportation and logistics company! This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys coordinating drivers and shipments, and has strong communication and problem-solving skills.

Job Responsibilities

• Coordinate and dispatch daily domestic and ocean container orders to meet customer deadlines.

• Communicate with drivers, customers, operations, safety, and accounting teams to ensure smooth transportation operations.

• Assign loads and provide dispatch instructions through phone, email, text, and dispatch software.

• Monitor driver and equipment availability to maximize efficiency and minimize unnecessary costs.

• Maintain accurate computer records, shipment notes, load updates, and customer issue resolutions.

• Coordinate with ports, rail facilities, steamship lines, and other transportation partners.

• Help resolve shipment delays, freight shortages, equipment imbalances, and other operational issues.

• Verify driver accessorial pay for accuracy and completeness.

• Provide driver support and participate in an after-hours on-call rotation as needed.

Qualifications

• Associate degree preferred, or at least 3 years of recent transportation or logistics experience.

• Strong communication, organization, and multitasking skills.

• Ability to prioritize time-sensitive shipments and manage multiple dispatches simultaneously.

• Strong attention to detail and accuracy when entering names, numbers, and shipment information.

• Basic mathematical skills, including ratios, percentages, and cargo weight calculations.

• Proficiency with computers and dispatch systems.

• Ability to work effectively with drivers, customers, and internal teams.

• Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

• Primarily computer-based work with frequent phone and electronic communication.

• Ability to sit for extended periods and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.

• Fast-paced, team-oriented environment requiring flexibility and sound decision-making.
